WEDO GLOBAL is delighted to collaborate with The Hong Kong Chartered Governance Institute to organize an outing experience for our ethnically diverse students from 100 FUN Chinese Class, where they had the opportunity to explore The Mills alongside dedicated volunteers. The Mills, known for its historical significance in Hong Kong’s textile industry and creative transformation, provided the perfect setting for a day of discovery, language learning, and meaningful cultural exchange.
From the moment students arrived, they were warmly greeted by volunteers and Cultural Ambassadors, ready to guide them through activities that made learning Chinese practical and enjoyable. Students picked up new Cantonese vocabulary—from numbers and colours to animals and clothing—through real interactions and playful conversation. These simple exchanges not only strengthened their language skills but also fostered confidence and curiosity in using Cantonese beyond the classroom.

"The interactive activities are very meaningful, rich in content, and help us gain a better understanding of the needs of ethnically diverse children."
The groups encountered the stories of Hong Kong’s textile heritage, sustainable living initiatives, and even friendly community members with their pets. Each encounter was unique, demonstrating how every experience becomes a learning opportunity when we engage with empathy and openness. Through dialogue and interaction, both students and volunteers discovered that learning flows both ways—everyone has something valuable to share and something new to learn.

"I like the small group combination of students, volunteers and Cultural Ambassadors. As it leads to a beautiful input of several opinions and sharing from different lifestyles."
By the end of the day, many students who had initially been shy or hesitant to speak found themselves communicating comfortably in Cantonese with the volunteers. Many volunteers shared how rewarding it was to witness these transformations. For some, it was their first time engaging closely with ethnically diverse students, and the experience offered fresh perspectives on cultural diversity and inclusion.

Together, we showed that by fostering connection through conversation, we can help children and youth grow in confidence, explore and understand more about our communities, and build bridges across cultures—one interaction at a time.
