Volunteering Activity: A Cantonese Learning Adventure

Our 100 Fun Chinese class this year has concluded on a positive note. To celebrate the students’ progress and provide meaningful opportunities for real-life language practice, we organized a special outdoor learning experience. Together with ethnically diverse students and @MTR volunteers, we spent a memorable day at Ocean Park—an ideal setting to bring Cantonese learning beyond the classroom.

Throughout the day, our team designed interactive language missions for students and volunteers to explore together across the park. From reading maps and signs to describing animals and expressing emotions, each activity encouraged students to use practical, everyday Cantonese in a fun and supportive environment. The students not only enjoyed the experience but also expanded their vocabulary and confidence in expressing themselves.

In between visits to different animal exhibits, students and volunteers engaged in simple yet meaningful conversations. They discussed their favourite animals and personal interests. Volunteers supported students by offering useful phrases, gentle guidance, and encouragement, celebrating every effort and growth of the students. This supportive approach helped build students’ confidence and comfort in using Cantonese to express themselves. At the same time, the experience allowed volunteers to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by ethnically diverse communities in learning new languages and integrating into society.

Your support created valuable opportunities for authentic language practice while fostering social inclusion, mutual understanding, and a stronger sense of community.

It was a day filled with joy and growth—a powerful reminder of the importance of creating inclusive learning experiences that empower students to thrive in Hong Kong. We look forward to co-creating more experiential learning journeys where culture, connection, and shared joy come together.
