Celebrating Mid-Autumn and Diversity Through Multicultural Community Exploration
Updated: 11 minutes ago
As the Mid-Autumn Festival brings families and communities together under the full moon, it also offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on belonging, connection, and the diverse stories that shape Hong Kong. This Mid-Autumn WEDO GLOBAL was delighted to welcome a group of Master’s students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Department of Management and Marketing to join our multicultural community exploration. Through a guided walk and interactive exchange in Wan Chai, students discovered how history, culture, food, and everyday encounters have contributed to the vibrant cultural fabric of our city.

Discovering Stories Beyond the Surface in Wan Chai
Hong Kong is widely recognised as an international city, yet the stories, traditions and contributions of its ethnically diverse communities are not always visible in our daily lives. Through our community tour, participants were encouraged to slow down, look more closely and listen to the stories that bring different communities closer together. Along the journey, they learned about the histories and lived experiences of diverse communities in Hong Kong, including how they have built homes, places of worship and support networks over generations.

Through guided sharing, group missions and conversations, participants had the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of multiculturalism in Hong Kong. It was especially meaningful to see students from different cultural backgrounds come together to exchange ideas, share perspectives and discover another side of Hong Kong together. The experience encouraged them to move beyond surface-level understandings of diversity and develop a deeper appreciation for the identities, histories and stories behind the communities they encountered.

“This tour reminded me that the world is big and that people have many different ways of living. Every lifestyle and culture deserves to be respected.”

“The cultural ambassadors were very warm and kind. They helped us better understand a culture that was new to many of us. The tour inspired me to keep an open mind, learn about different cultures, and make new friends.”
A highlight of the tour was the visit to the Sikh Temple, offering participants a new cultural experience and a chance to learn through direct interaction. After removing their shoes and covering their heads as a sign of respect, participants entered the prayer hall, observed its peaceful atmosphere and learned about Sikh values of equality, service and community. They also visited the community kitchen and shared a vegetarian meal together, learning how food, service and shared space can create a strong sense of connection and belonging.

“Experiencing Sikh culture was the most unforgettable part of the tour, especially trying vegetarian food. As I had never experienced it before, I found it very interesting.”

“The vegetarian meal and visiting the temple were particularly meaningful. Being inside the temple and experiencing its atmosphere gave me a deeper understanding of Sikh culture and made me feel more involved. The tour also motivated me to learn more about different cultures.”
At WEDO GLOBAL, we believe that communities become stronger when people have opportunities to meet, learn, exchange and create shared experiences across differences. Cultural learning is not only about discovering others, it is also about reflecting on ourselves, our responsibilities, and the kind world we hope to build together.

We thank the students and staff for joining this meaningful journey and for bringing their curiosity, thoughtfulness, and willingness to engage. May this Mid-Autumn Festival be a time of connection and appreciation for an inclusive Hong Kong where everyone can belong.
