We recently had the pleasure of organising a visit for a group of ethnically diverse students from Maryknoll Convent School (Primary Section). The outing took place at The Mills and was designed to deepen students’ understanding of Hong Kong’s local community and culture, spark curiosity about their surroundings, and provide opportunities to practice Cantonese in everyday life.

Our team curated a series of experiential and collaborative activities at The Mills, encouraging students to actively explore their surroundings while engaging with language and culture in meaningful ways. As they discovered the story of how The Mills transformed from a textile factory into a creative cultural space, many students shared that the space was different from what they had imagined. From understanding the contributions of factory workers to observing the redevelopment of the site into a multi-purpose cultural hub, the experience was both engaging and eye-opening.

“The tutors were kind and friendly, and were able to guide students to explore the surrounding environment, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the cultural stories behind The Mills.” Teacher
One of the goals of this activity was to encourage students to step outside the classroom and apply their Chinese in everyday life, gradually building their confidence. One of the most memorable moments was when they met a few friendly dogs and their owner. With encouragement from Cultural Ambassadors and teachers, students eagerly stepped forward to chat with the owner in Cantonese, not only learning more about the animals but also practicing their language and communication skills.

“Students were able to take the initiative to chat with people in the community, which helped boost their confidence.” Teacher
Throughout the journey, students demonstrated strong curiosity and a keen motivation to learn. They were willing to try, eager to observe, and brave in stepping out of their comfort zones. Through this experience, they not only learned the language but also built meaningful connections with the community. We look forward to creating more opportunities for students to learn and grow through such experiences.
