I enjoy learning different languages.” Participant The students and the Cultural Ambassadors showed a lot of enthusiasm during the workshop. Different games aroused students' interest, as they actively participated in answering questions and the overall activity. They also paid full attention when the Cultural Ambassadors explained and gave instructions. We believe they have learned a lot of new knowledge and, hence, felt the friendliness and enthusiasm of people from different cultural backgrounds. WEDO GLOBAL also hopes to bring out the message of inclusion, connecting people of different cultural backgrounds, races, and abilities, overcoming all challenges and boundaries, understanding and respecting each other, and encouraging everyone to participate and contribute to society and build our city together. "My favourite activity was trying on a scarf because it made me happy." Participant This workshop allowed students to experience different cultures, enhance their cognition of multiculturalism, and understand the difficulties faced by ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, developing their empathy and care towards the people around them. This workshop also allowed the Cultural Ambassadors in WEDO GLOBAL to understand more about the life and needs of disabled people, which can be beneficial for them to lead and communicate with participants with different learning needs to experience and learn about culture. “I got to know more about ethnic minorities because I saw them today.” Participant In addition, we specially invited a graduate from SAHK B M Kotewall Memorial School to be the assistant of the workshop; WEDO GLOBAL hopes to inspire students to understand that once an opportunity is provided to people from different backgrounds and abilities, everyone can work together and play different roles in the society, contribute together. Social enterprise WEDO GLOBAL was invited by HKUST’s Dean of Students Office to conduct the “Harmony in Diversity: Communication Training Workshop” for frontline staff of different departments. The university has stakeholders from different cultural backgrounds, and when frontline staff communicate with them, effective communication might be challenging. This training workshop was designed to help staff learn about different cultures through interactive games and case studies, focusing on understanding the formation of biases and stereotypes and how this knowledge can facilitate cross-cultural communication, contributing to a more harmonious and respectful university community. Case Sharing | Integrating into daily work The training started by introducing WEDO Cultural Ambassadors in an interactive way, allowing participants to understand the experiences and challenges of ethnic minorities living in Hong Kong. The experience sharing of Cultural Ambassadors led to a discussion and reflection among the participants. Further leading to being aware of the formation of biases and stereotypes and reflecting on the possible thoughts and behaviors aroused by such negative impressions in order to improve cross-cultural communication in daily work. "Do not only make wild guesses, try to have a deeper understanding." Interactive Cultural Games | Building Empathy The interactive games evoked the curiosity and initiative of participants, hence, enhancing their cultural knowledge in daily life. In addition to learning cross-cultural communication skills, Cultural Ambassadors and participants also had a group discussion on real-life case studies. "Cultural sharing, case studies, allowed me to think from another angle on what can be coordinated at work." Overall, the "Harmony in Diversity: Communication Training Workshop" provided a fun and engaging way for participants to enhance cultural knowledge, improve their cultural sensitivity, and strengthen their mindset, skills and ability to communicate with stakeholders from different cultural backgrounds, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious and inclusive campus. #WEDOGLOBAL #HKUST #Multicultural #CulturalDiversity #Diversity #DEI #Inclusion #Training #CulturalSensitivity #InclusiveWorkplace
- Henna DIY Workshop
When someone has Henna drawing on their skin, some may stare inquisitively, and some may raise questions, such as "Is that a tattoo?". Henna is actually made from a natural plant and it is a form of art commonly used for decorating or beautifying the hand or body with different meanings of blessings. Social enterprise WEDO GLOBAL was glad to organize 2 Henna DIY Workshops for the students and staff members at the City University of Hong Kong to provide them with in-depth cultural knowledge sharing along with the Henna experience. With the guidance of our Cultural Ambassadors, participants learned about the origin, designs, and uses of Henna. During the workshop, Our Cultural Ambassadors also demonstrated the techniques of Henna drawing. After practicing and familiarizing the Henna drawing skills, the participants create and draw their own patterns. "Very friendly and clear explanation, so far an excellent introductory workshop, relaxing yet informative." - Kola "It is a very fresh and interesting experience, and I also learned more about South Asian culture. I got a very nice Henna on my hand, and I will try to practice more to improve my Henna drawing skill." - Mandy We are glad to see that the participants enjoyed themselves very much throughout the Henna DIY Workshop, and we appreciate their creativity and designs. Participants also gained a deeper understanding of the cultural significance behind Henna drawing and listened to multicultural sharing. We look forward to organizing more cultural activities to facilitate inclusion in the society. #WEDOGLOBAL #CityUniversityofHongKong #Culturalworkshop #CulturalDiversity #Diversity #Inclusion #multiculturalism #HK #Henna #Workshop
- "Same- not Same" Multicultural Learning Program
Many people from different cultural backgrounds live in Hong Kong. If children are exposed to multiculturalism from a young age, it can help them develop empathy and increase their cultural intelligence, at the same time, they can also learn to understand and respect others. Social enterprise WEDO GLOBAL and St. Paul’s College Primary School jointly organized a Multicultural Learning Program to provide a series of multicultural experience activities for the junior primary students, including interactive drama, cultural sharing, South Asian cultural game experience and cultural art workshops. These activities are vibrant and interesting, with easy-to-understand explanations, allowing participants to experience and understand multiculturalism more deeply and develop empathy and good character for serving others. "I like learning about different cultures since each culture has its characteristics.” A Primary 2 participant. “Meow Meow is Missing!” Interactive Drama |Learn Multiculturalism, Arouse Curiosity In this session, the multicultural picture book published by WEDO GLOBAL - "Meow Meow is Missing!”, was presented in the form of an interactive drama, navigating the participants to ‘visit’ the Yau Ma Tei community, admiring different shops and culturally distinctive buildings. Throughout the story, participants communicated and interacted with our ethnic minority Cultural Ambassadors to spark their interest and curiosity in multiculturalism. 「“I want to help people in need, because sometimes we would also face challenges, needing others' help.” A Primary 3 participant. Through listening to the growth experience of the cultural ambassadors, participants can learn their language and culture and ask questions in the process to further deepen their understanding of multiculturalism and eliminate racial discrimination and prejudice. With the interesting and vibrant interactive drama, participants learned multicultural knowledge and built the confidence to care for and help those in the community. Game Workshop | Develop Empathy The game workshops were led by cultural ambassadors from different cultural backgrounds, combining cultural knowledge, five-sense experience, and South Asian cultural games. Participants can learn about people of different ethnicities in Hong Kong while playing cultural games. Through the experience of the five senses, they can learn about different cultures and customs in terms of clothing, food, and architecture . Thus, understanding the cultural differences and the difficulties faced by ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, developing empathy, and learning to accept and respect others. “I am willing to care for the people of different ethnicities in society because they are also a part of my family.” A Primary 1 participant. Arabic Calligraphy x Cultural Bookmark | A Gift for Ethnic Minority members in the Community Cultivating the mindset of sharing and serving others from a young age is very important. The cultural art workshop taught participants the cultural meaning of writing Arabic calligraphy and greetings. They designed two bookmarks, one for themselves as a souvenir. The other bookmark was given to WEDO GLOBAL to deliver to ethnic minority children in the community. Through the art creation process, participants can unleash their creativity and imagination, share their concepts, appreciate each other's works, and express their kindness to their community. “I enjoyed making the bookmark the most because I can make a bookmark for myself and also gift one to others.” A Primary 2 participant. Epilogue|One small step towards an Inclusive Society During the activity, we learned that the participants might have certain stereotypes or misconceptions about ethnic minorities due to their parents' past experiences or media reports. This brings out the importance of school education. Through a series of multicultural activities, the school can establish correct values for students, encourage students to try to get in touch with people of different ethnicities, serve others, contribute to society, and build an inclusive and caring community together. “I really enjoyed today’s activity, because I was able to broaden my horizon.” A Primary 3 Participant #WEDOGLOBAL #Multicultural #CulturalDiversity #Inclusion #Artcreation #Programme
- Globally Minded Teacher Learning Programme (「世」心老師計劃)
Sept 15, 2021 Supported by the Faculty of Education and Human Development of the Education University of Hong Kong (Strategic Areas: Learning and Teaching and FEHD Innovating Teaching beyond e-Learning Grants), this learning programme was implemented from September to December 2021. The programme included a series of workshops, virtual tours and sharing from frontline teachers. All of which culminated in the Multicultural Video-making competition to assess what working in culturally diverse settings might mean to our students. Their videos are posted here, which may serve as a resource for teaching. The programme was collectively designed by Professor Kerry J. Kennedy (C&I), Ms Terri Chan (C&I), Dr Daphnee Lee (EPL), Dr Miron Bhowmik (EPL) and Dr Jan Gube (C&I) with the support of Ms Eunice Chau (C&I) and implemented in collaboration with WEDO Global. This programme was designed to support undergraduate students to teach or work in culturally diverse settings, particularly in the growing response to the presence of non-Chinese speaking (NCS) or “ethnic minority” (EM) students in Hong Kong schools. The programme design specifically draws on Professor James Banks’ multicultural education metaphors: “to know”, “to care” and “to act”, which formed the basis of its expected learning outcomes: (To know) Examine the global values related to Hong Kong’s diverse community and school contexts (To care) Develop an awareness of the lives of learners from different cultural groups in Hong Kong through community and experiential learning activities (To act) Apply relevant global perspectives to teaching that form the basis of addressing the needs and aspirations of culturally diverse learners

- Overcoming the language barrier Actively participating in an inclusive workplace
By CSR Times Nayab Feroz, currently working as a cultural ambassador at WEDO GLOBAL, speaks fluent Cantonese. What's surprising is that she used to resist communicating in Cantonese because of her pronunciation and fear of being teased. She said, "When I was in Secondary School, others laughed at me as if I was saying foul language because of my inaccurate pronunciation. In order not to cause misunderstandings, I couldn't dare to speak those words again." Later, with the encouragement of teachers and the founder of WEDO GLOBAL, Bosco, she worked hard to learn Cantonese, and now she can speak and answer questions in Cantonese fluently. She has even become a cultural ambassador, leading tours using Cantonese to let more people understand the culture of ethnic minorities. She also goes to different schools to promote multicultural education. Learn by Doing Overcoming Language Difficulties Bosco also understands that authentic language profoundly impacts on ethnic minorities, so he and other colleagues have always encouraged ethnic minority colleagues to listen and speak more and are willing to teach and correct them. "During lunch, we all share our work experiences so we can understand the problems they encounter, and through simple conversations, let them have the opportunity to listen to and learn to speak in Cantonese." Nayab said with a smile “I like to repeat after my colleagues in Cantonese because this method of learning Cantonese is very effective.” After graduating from secondary school, Nayab joined WEDO GLOBAL. In the past 4 years, besides overcoming language difficulties, she also gained a lot of inspiration and satisfaction during work. She said “I thought of becoming a teacher when I was young. But after becoming a cultural ambassador, I saw many participants’ attitudes and perspectives towards ethnic minorities change, especially witnessing those who were very quiet at the beginning of the activities becoming very friendly with us after the activity made me more interested in this job. I hope to continue working here in the future.” Thanks to her hard work, Nayab is now also in charge of communication and activity arrangements with the schools and other organizations. Bosco said he hopes to train her to the managing level, in order to bring her into full play. Promoting multicultural education with empathy Compared with other local ethnic minorities, Nayab is one of the luckier ones because she has not experienced discrimination when applying for a job. Still, she admits that she has encountered prejudice when conducting activities. Even so, Nayab considers it as a challenge "sometimes I feel frustrated when I hear other people's misconceptions, but I try to control my emotions and answer calmly so that they can understand and change their thoughts." As a person who has also been through unpleasant experiences, she hopes to teach ethnic minorities more knowledge and values of personal growth—hoping we all can love harmoniously with one another. - Multicultural Learning Experience: Tsim Sha Tsui Community Tour
Teachers and students from Christian Alliance International School participated in our Multicultural Learning Experience, to step out of the classroom, gain new cultural knowledge and clear up common misunderstandings towards people coming from different cultural backgrounds. During the journey, WEDO GLOBAL Cultural Ambassadors guided participants to explore the Chungking Mansions where they got to know about the history and culture of the ethnically diverse community. In Chungking Mansions, participants visited different cultural stores, learned about new cultures and tried different snacks and drinks. They also learned several greetings in different languages, which they can communicate with the community members to show their appreciation during the interviews and dialogues. "Visiting Chungking mansions impressed me the most. I never really thought much of this building until I saw what was inside, which proved to be a place worth visiting" - Daniel Participants had the chance to learn more about the Islamic culture, as well as the food requirements and concept of “Halal”. They shared that if they go to a restaurant with Muslim friends in the future, they would be more aware of the menu selection so that everyone can also enjoy the experience. The inspiration this tour has brought me is the importance of respecting other cultures and how tolerance/ having cultural understanding mutually can lead to good multicultural relationships. - Adrian At WEDO GLOBAL, our goal is to promote cultural diversity and social inclusion, so as to enhance participants' cultural awareness through various cultural experiences. The Tsim Sha Tsui Community Tour provided a great multicultural learning opportunity for participants to gain more profound knowledge, explore different cultural values, understand the beauty of multiculturalism, and the importance of racial harmony. #WEDOGLOBAL #ChristianAllianceInternationalSchoolofHongKong #Multicultural #Culture #Diversity #Inclusion #SocialInclusion #EthnicMinority #Tour
- Ethnic Minority Tour Guide in “Home” Kong
Culture Ambassador Nayab has been doing her best in learning Cantonese and integrating into mainstream society. When she was a child, she had difficulty in distinguishing these Chinese words「晴」、「清」and「精」. Today, she can serve as a community tour guide using fluent Cantonese to introduce the "home" of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong and become a bridge between ethnic minorities and mainstream society. What is the story behind her? The 5 things Nayab brings along with herself: 1. Portable prayer mat: As a Muslim, Nayab needs to pray five times a day in the direction of the Sacred Mosque in Mecca. The lightweight mat is convenient for her to pray anytime, anywhere. 2. Keychain: When she visited her hometown with her family, she encountered this keychain with her name, which is unusual to find in Hong Kong, so it seemed special to her. When she visited her hometown with her family, she encountered a keychain with her name on it, and it was not custom-made, so it seemed special to her. 3. A handmade reusable mask: During the early stages of the pandemic, WEDO GLOBAL trained ethnic minority ladies to sew reusable masks, which could support the families financially and solve the problem of mask shortage. Nayab's mother also joined the team. 4. iPad: In addition to using it for work, she also uses it to record her daily life. 5. Small shoulder bag: Recently she got interested in crocheting, and this bag is her recent creation.
