This Mid-Autumn Festival, WEDO GLOBAL organised a memorable multicultural community tour for master’s students from the Department of Management and Marketing at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Through guided tours and interactive exchanges with cultural ambassadors, participants slowed down, observed their surroundings, and listened to stories of everyday life from different communities. Along the way, they discovered Wan Chai’s history and culture, and how these communities have helped shape Hong Kong’s rich multicultural identity. Through a range of sharing activities and group tasks, participants reflected on what cultural diversity means to Hong Kong. Students from different cultural backgrounds came together to exchange ideas and perspectives, gaining a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s diverse communities and the identities, histories, and stories that shape them. “This tour reminded me that the world is big and that people have many different ways of living. Every lifestyle and culture deserves to be respected.” “The cultural ambassadors were very warm and kind. They helped us better understand a culture that was new to many of us. The tour inspired me to keep an open mind, learn about different cultures, and make new friends.” A highlight of the tour was the Sikh Temple, where participants observed the peaceful atmosphere and learned more about the community's focus on equality, service and helping others. They then went to the fair kitchen and shared a vegetarian meal together, learning how food, volunteering and shared spaces can bring people together and build stronger connections across cultures. “Experiencing Sikh culture was the most unforgettable part of the tour, especially trying vegetarian food. As I had never experienced it before, I found it very interesting.” “The vegetarian meal and visiting the temple were particularly meaningful. Being inside the temple and experiencing its atmosphere gave me a deeper understanding of Sikh culture and made me feel more involved. The tour also motivated me to learn more about different cultures.” We believe that creating opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to learn from one another, exchange ideas, and build shared experiences fosters social inclusion and sustainable development. Cultural learning is not only about understanding others; it is also a process of reflection and learning about ourselves. WEDO GLOBAL was delighted to organise a Cultural Sharing and Henna Experience for staff at Eversheds Sutherland Hong Kong celebrating diversity and South Asian heritage in Hong Kong. The session brought together personal stories and a hands-on henna experience, giving colleagues a chance to pause from their workday and learn more about Hong Kong’s ethnically diverse communities. Our Cultural Ambassadors shared their personal backgrounds and life stories in Hong Kong, offering staff a closer look at the experiences of the city’s diverse communities. Guided by our Cultural Ambassadors, staff then learned about the origins of henna, the customs and occasions in which it is traditionally used, and its cultural significance. During the Henna DIY experience, participants had the opportunity to try drawing henna themselves. For some colleagues, it was their first time trying henna; others recalled past experiences and were happy to share with each other. As henna cones moved across hands, so did the conversation — each design became a small doorway into a broader exchange about identity, tradition and belonging. The Cultural Sharing and Henna Experience offered a meaningful and interactive way to learn more about South Asian heritage. Meaningful cultural learning begins with human connection. By stepping into community spaces and engaging with lived experiences, participants move beyond surface-level understanding and develop deeper empathy. We were delighted to welcome staff and colleagues from Tung Wah College to join our Wan Chai Sikh Community Tour, an immersive experience designed to deepen understanding of Sikh culture and Hong Kong’s ethnically diverse communities. Throughout the journey, participants gained insight into the daily lives and cultural practices of the Sikh community. Guided by our Cultural Ambassador, they engaged in meaningful conversations, observed traditions firsthand, and explored the values that shape the community’s identity. Concepts such as equality, service, and acceptance were not only introduced, but experienced through direct interaction and shared dialogue. The experience highlighted how cross-cultural engagement can move beyond awareness to foster genuine understanding and connection. “This tour inspired me that there are different cultures in Hong Kong. We should respect each other!” One of the most memorable moments was the visit to the community kitchen (langar), where participants enjoyed a traditional Indian vegetarian meal together. Operated entirely by volunteers, this simple yet powerful experience offered a meaningful reminder for participants that genuine connection often begins with shared moments. “Visiting the prayer hall and trying the Indian Vegetarian cuisine was the most memorable part, it also inspired me to accept, respect and protect different cultures.” We appreciate the openness and active participation of the participants. Experiences like these are not only about learning, but about inspiring participants to carry these insights into their daily work and interactions. WEDO GLOBAL was delighted to conduct a Cultural Sensitivity Training for colleagues at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), with a particular focus on staff who regularly interact with students, colleagues and visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds. The session explored the importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity in an educational setting, as well as practical approaches to fostering respectful and inclusive communication. The training began with an interactive introduction to our Cultural Ambassadors and other ethnically diverse members of the Hong Kong community. This was followed by a series of interactive activities that explored different cultural practices and customs. The session sparked moments of surprise and laughter while offering meaningful insights into the lived experiences and challenges faced by ethnically diverse communities in Hong Kong. “This training helped me better understand cultural differences and how to communicate in a friendly and respectful way with people from diverse backgrounds.” Through the Cultural Ambassadors’ personal stories, participants also explored how common biases and stereotypes are formed, and how they can subtly influence our perceptions and behaviours in everyday interactions. The session provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on their own experiences and consider practical ways to communicate more effectively and respectfully across cultures in the workplace. “The session helped me recognize the importance of inclusive communication in educational settings and its role in fostering a more respectful learning and working environment.” Creating an inclusive campus is a shared responsibility across the University community. We were delighted to welcome colleagues from Langham Hospitality Group to our Tsim Sha Tsui Community Tour, designed to deepen understanding of Hong Kong’s diverse communities and the role of inclusion in service-oriented industries. The journey began at Kowloon Mosque, where participants explored the history of Muslim communities in Hong Kong and their longstanding presence in the city. Through learning about Islamic practices, including prayer rituals, festivals, and dietary customs, participants gained a clearer understanding of how cultural and religious needs shape daily life. Many shared that this was their first visit to a mosque, and the experience encouraged thoughtful questions and meaningful reflection on how to better accommodate diverse needs in their professional roles. "The whole tour was very informative, allowed me to get to know more about different cultures, and I am now more interested to learn about other cultures." The tour continued to Chungking Mansions, a dynamic hub reflecting the everyday experiences and contributions of ethnically diverse communities in Hong Kong. Guided by Cultural Ambassadors, participants engaged directly with shop owners and explored a variety of cultural products and businesses. These interactions offered valuable insights into the role of these communities as active contributors to Hong Kong’s social and economic landscape. "Visiting the different stores like grocery stores gave me a deeper understanding that while cultures may differ, our daily needs are very similar, and it also helped me gain a better understanding of ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong." The experience highlighted how direct community engagement can challenge assumptions, strengthen empathy, and support more inclusive and culturally responsive decision-making in the workplace. What began as a study group to support students preparing for the DSE quickly grew into something much more—a genuine support network where students could thrive. Tutors and students alike uplifted one another, and even in moments of struggle, no one faced challenges alone. Through consistent effort and mutual encouragement, what could have been a stressful revision period became a shared and meaningful journey. We were delighted to have the support of our sponsors, Sino Group and the Ng Teng Fong Charitable Foundation, who joined us to celebrate this milestone. Their representative shared valuable insights into workplace expectations and practical interview skills, and engaged students in mock interviews that encouraged reflection and growth. This exchange not only boosted students’ confidence but also demonstrated how real-world exposure can support future planning. The celebration at The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong provided a joyful and well-deserved opportunity for students to unwind after months of dedication. Our 100 Fun Chinese class this year has concluded on a positive note. To celebrate the students’ progress and provide meaningful opportunities for real-life language practice, we organized a special outdoor learning experience. Together with ethnically diverse students and @MTR volunteers, we spent a memorable day at Ocean Park—an ideal setting to bring Cantonese learning beyond the classroom. Throughout the day, our team designed interactive language missions for students and volunteers to explore together across the park. From reading maps and signs to describing animals and expressing emotions, each activity encouraged students to use practical, everyday Cantonese in a fun and supportive environment. The students not only enjoyed the experience but also expanded their vocabulary and confidence in expressing themselves. In between visits to different animal exhibits, students and volunteers engaged in simple yet meaningful conversations. They discussed their favourite animals and personal interests. Volunteers supported students by offering useful phrases, gentle guidance, and encouragement, celebrating every effort and growth of the students. This supportive approach helped build students’ confidence and comfort in using Cantonese to express themselves. At the same time, the experience allowed volunteers to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by ethnically diverse communities in learning new languages and integrating into society. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the MTR volunteers who participated in this activity. Your enthusiasm and effort to connect with students made the day both enjoyable and impactful. We recently had the pleasure of organising a visit for a group of ethnically diverse students from Maryknoll Convent School (Primary Section). The outing took place at The Mills and was designed to deepen students’ understanding of Hong Kong’s local community and culture, spark curiosity about their surroundings, and provide opportunities to practice Cantonese in everyday life. Our team curated a series of experiential and collaborative activities at The Mills, encouraging students to actively explore their surroundings while engaging with language and culture in meaningful ways. As they discovered the story of how The Mills transformed from a textile factory into a creative cultural space, many students shared that the space was different from what they had imagined. From understanding the contributions of factory workers to observing the redevelopment of the site into a multi-purpose cultural hub, the experience was both engaging and eye-opening. “The tutors were kind and friendly, and were able to guide students to explore the surrounding environment, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the cultural stories behind The Mills.” Teacher One of the goals of this activity was to encourage students to step outside the classroom and apply their Chinese in everyday life, gradually building their confidence. One of the most memorable moments was when they met a few friendly dogs and their owner. How can students truly understand the experiences of ethnically diverse communities in Hong Kong? We believe the answer lies in participation, not just observation. We had the pleasure of conducting interactive South Asian Game workshops for F.4 students at S.K.H. Lam Kau Mow Secondary School aimed to deepen their understanding of Hong Kong’s ethnically diverse communities and the everyday challenges faced by ethnic minorities. Instead of just talking about language barriers, students got to experience them for themselves. Through interactive games, they had to navigate situations using limited or unfamiliar language, which quickly became more challenging than expected. What started off as fun soon led to moments of hesitation, confusion, and even frustration. This helped students better understand how language differences can affect confidence, inclusion, and everyday communication. It shifted their perspective from simply knowing about the issue to actually feeling it. The activity also sparked meaningful reflections, with many students realising how something as simple as language can create real barriers in daily life. “Learning a new language in a circle was very engaging and helped me better understand ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.” “Learning a new language was challenging, especially because of the complicated pronunciation. It made me think about the difficulties ethnic minorities may face when learning Cantonese, such as differences in structure.” Culture can sometimes feel broad or difficult to relate to, so we focused on making it simple and meaningful for students. Through interactive activities, we introduced cultural elements from different ethnic communities in Hong Kong in ways that connected to their everyday lives. From traditions to cultural differences, students began to see how culture shapes the way people think and behave. By breaking down ideas into engaging and easy-to-understand concepts, the workshop encouraged students to stay curious and be more open to different perspectives. “I enjoyed the games and drawing activities, as they helped me learn new words and languages. The workshop was both enjoyable and educational, and I even learned how to write in another language.” “I really enjoyed the drawing activities and learning about different cultures, especially understanding what Halal means and its connection to religion. This workshop allowed me to see a different perspective of them.” What made the workshop impactful was the students’ active participation. Through collaboration and reflection, they gained not only knowledge but also a stronger sense of empathy for people from diverse backgrounds. We would like to thank S.K.H. WEDO GLOBAL was delighted to collaborate with WSP to host a henna booth for their colleagues as part of the celebration of the World Day for Cultural Diversity. This special day highlights both the richness of the world’s cultures and the importance of intercultural dialogue in building peace and sustainable development. At the henna booth, colleagues selected their preferred designs and experienced South Asian henna art firsthand. While drawing Henna, they had the opportunity to interact and exchange with Cultural Ambassadors, learning about each other’s stories. Cultural Ambassadors also shared the cultural meanings behind the art, allowing participants to deepen their understanding in a relaxed and engaging atmosphere. Some colleagues shared that it was their first time trying henna, while others reflected on their past experiences, with everyone enjoying the activity. Through the cultural experience booth and sharing, participating colleagues were able to learn about the customs and cultures of Hong Kong’s ethnically diverse communities in an interactive and approachable way, fostering meaningful cultural exchange. We are honoured to return for the third consecutive year to deliver Inclusive Workplace training for supervisors and staff of the MTR Summer Internship Programme. This ongoing collaboration reflects a shared commitment to building a workplace where every intern feels seen, supported, and valued. In this session, we focused on practical and relatable ways to work effectively with ethnically diverse interns. Through real-life scenarios and video clips, participants explored cultural awareness, unconscious bias, and inclusive communication, while picking up simple tips to navigate everyday interactions with greater confidence and empathy. “I learned not to make assumptions about others, to be interested in their cultures and habits, and to be mindful of my language so I avoid stereotypes and bias.” We sincerely appreciate the staff who joined us and took the time to reflect on how they can better support diverse interns. Real-life experiences play a powerful role in shaping young people’s growth and self-discovery. In partnership with Teach For Hong Kong, WEDO GLOBAL provided training to Form 3 students from Delia Memorial School (Glee Path), equipping them with storytelling and facilitation skills. With the guidance of our Cultural Ambassadors, the students conducted Mei Foo Multicultural Tours aimed at promoting multicultural understanding, strengthening community connections, and building their confidence and engagement. As the training partner, WEDO GLOBAL designed and facilitated two interactive workshops. The first workshop focused on building students’ storytelling skills, guiding students to craft engaging narratives, connecting personal and community stories, and presenting with confidence. Through a series of interactive activities, students practised storytelling and received feedback to enhance their delivery. “I found talking about our own culture items the most impressive, I've learned new techniques of presenting and building my confidence.” Student The second workshop focused on cultivating students' activity facilitation skills, equipping them with practical techniques to increase participant engagement and to design meaningful learning experiences for diverse participants. Working in groups, they practised guiding different segments of the tour, strengthening their collaboration, communication, and facilitation skills. “The workshop provided us with engaging games, which gave me ideas on how to respond during tours.” — Student The training programme culminated in the Mei Foo multicultural guided tour, which provided students with a valuable hands-on opportunity to share their stories with participants from HSBC and members of the local community. It was inspiring to see the students step into leadership roles, guiding the tour, sharing stories, and interacting with participants with growing confidence and ownership. Their development was evident not only in their presentation and facilitation skills, but also in their strengthened sense of identity and connection to the community. Following the tour, participants expressed their appreciation, describing the experience as inspiring and praising the students’ confidence and performance. “The history of Mei Foo is fascinating. Learning that it used to be a beach and how its name was created was particularly memorable.
