- Volunteering Activity: A Cultural Exploration at The Mills
WEDO GLOBAL is excited to collaborate with Young Living Hong Kong Limited and Time Auction for our recent volunteer activity, where we explored The Mills with ethnically diverse students and volunteers. The Mills, a testament to the development of Hong Kong's textile industry, is rich in historical narratives and local artistic culture. "I like that this activity allows us to explore different places while the children learn Chinese and understand historical stories." Through collaborative cultural tasks designed by our team, students from diverse backgrounds interacted with volunteers and community members (and, of course, their pets!) while exploring and completing their tasks in The Mills, fostering a deeper understanding of one another and the community. "This activity inspired me to take an extra step and actively understand the needs of different children." A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who participated in this meaningful activity, engaging with ethnically diverse students in Chinese. Your efforts provided them with the opportunity to learn and practice daily Cantonese while helping them better understand the community, promoting social harmony and diversity. - Empowering Educators: Insights from HKUST Cultural Sensitivity Training Sessions
It’s our honour to host impactful Cultural Sensitivity Training Sessions for the teaching staff, student advisors, and support units within the Dean of Students’ Office at HKUST. Participants from diverse cultural backgrounds and professional roles came together, each contributing their unique perspectives. In collaborative group activities, participants engaged in discussions that deepened their understanding of various cultural norms and gestures, revealing significant gaps that can arise in cross-cultural communication due to cultural differences. The diversity present in the room highlighted the importance of acquiring cultural knowledge and awareness, which is vital for effective collaboration with colleagues and engagement with students. Additionally, participants were able to recognize their assumptions and unconscious bias, enabling them to make more equitable decisions in both workplace and classroom settings. “The most valuable part of the program was the interactive sharing, making us understand the stereotypes implanted in our minds.” During case study discussions, participants explored effective practices for fostering an inclusive classroom environment. They exchanged insights and strategies in smaller groups, actively considering different perspectives and experiences in contact with diverse cultural background students, which enriched their understanding and cultivated a supportive community within the school. - Bridging Cultures: A Historical Walk for Educators
It was our honour to organize a remarkable Central community tour for a group of early childhood educators from the C-for-Chinese@JC project, representing around 30 kindergartens across Hong Kong, along with colleagues from the Centre for Child and Family Science of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). The heritage walk was designed to enhance their understanding of our vibrant and ethnically diverse community. Tai Kwun is a historical complex recognized as a living record of Hong Kong's legal, judiciary, and penal system. Our Cultural Ambassadors guided participants to explore another side of Tai Kwun, where many ethnically diverse members in the city started their journeys and stories in Hong Kong. Participants gained a deeper understanding not only of their stories and cultures but also their contributions to Hong Kong society. "Previously, my understanding of ethnic minorities was too one-sided, but now I have a more comprehensive understanding of them." Moreover, participants had the unique opportunity to visit the Jamia Mosque, a declared monument and the oldest mosque in Hong Kong. They learned about greetings and customs, which will help them build closer connections with Muslim students in their schools. They also raised questions about the daily practices of Muslim, demonstrating their commitment to understanding and supporting the diverse needs of their students. “When visiting the mosque, Cultural Ambassadors explained the religion in detail, including the culture, habits etc, allowing me to have a deeper understanding of the religion." This Central community tour was not just an exploration of historical sites but a meaningful journey into understanding the diverse cultures that shape our society. WEDO GLOBAL is honored to collaborate with The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong to offer a cultural sensitivity training workshop for staff across various departments who regularly interact with students and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds. Our aim is to work together in fostering a university culture that values every voice and perspective. Our Cultural Ambassadors led an interactive training workshop designed to enhance participants' cultural awareness and knowledge while developing effective cross-cultural communication strategies. Through engaging activities and real-life case studies, participants gained deeper insights into the lived experiences, challenges, and perspectives of students from diverse cultural backgrounds. - Commemorating Our Journey in Year of the Dragon
In the Year of the Dragon (2024-25), we are excited to celebrate the remarkable impact we have achieved together. With over 6,000 participants from different sectors and backgrounds engaging in our cultural activities and more than 530 sessions conducted across schools, institutes and organizations. We are proud to have empowered 240 ethnically diverse youths , fostering meaningful connections and enriching lives in our community. This year, we also introduced a range of exciting new programs on top of our existing programs, aimed at enhancing cultural awareness and sensitivity among our participants. We are proud to say that we have taken significant steps forward, positively impacting many lives in the process. Major Milestones Achieved During the Year: Successfully Organized a D&I Education Forum Over 100 participants engaged in meaningful discussions to raise awareness and attention of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Education among schools and community partners. EmpowerZ Training Programme Partnered with MTR to deliver specialized training sessions for EmpowerZ trainees, enhancing their professional development. Release of the second Multicultural Picture Book, “Seeing a Different MaMa” Launched our second storybook, “ Seeing a Different MaMa” , featuring a sharing session and storytelling event at both the 2024 Book Fair and Eslite Bookstore . 100 FUN Chinese Class for primary students Provided 110 sessions of Chinese classes and 7 outdoor learning activities for over 100 primary students to enhance their Chinese ability as well as communication skills. DSE Study Group Conducted over 240 sessions to support over 100 F5-F6 ethnically diverse students in preparing their DSE Mathematics. Voices of Tomorrow Training Trained 16 ethnically diverse youths to cultivate their professional skills to prepare them for various roles and industries. Multicultural and Global-Minded Education Developed 18 interactive sessions of an educational program consisting of Multicultural Education and Global-Minded Education designed for secondary students, aimed at cultivating their cultural awareness and broadening their global perspective. - Multicultural Community Exploration: Wan Chai Community Tour
WEDO GLOBAL is honored to organize the "Wan Chai Community Tour" for JLL staff, providing them with the opportunity to explore the Sikh Temple and learn about Sikh culture together. This multicultural experience allowed participants to interact with members from diverse cultural backgrounds, enhancing their understanding and knowledge of various cultures through interactive learning and 5-sense experiences. It was the first time to visit the Sikh Temple for majority of participants, and this immersive experience allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of Sikh culture. Cultural Ambassadors shared with participants about Sikh culture, etiquette, and reminders, which many found intriguing. Participants expressed that this activity inspired them to learn more about various cultures. "The activity is very informative, it’s a brand new experience that helped me better understand people from diverse backgrounds and beliefs," Mavis. The Cultural Ambassadors then guided them to the Langar Hall in the temple, where participants experienced the Langar culture in the Sikh Temple. Here, everyone sits on the floor to have a meal of Indian vegetarian cuisine, regardless of social status or background, "What impressed me the most was the Langar, where the people were very friendly and welcoming. All the food was special and delicious! This experience gave me a brief understanding of Sikh culture and the origin of Sikhism, as well as insights into the features and stories behind the artwork in the Langar Hall," Alfred. We believe that sincere communication can enrich participants' cultural horizons, inspire them to think more and to enhance their understanding of a diverse and inclusive society. It also offers opportunities for learning, relaxation, and reflection amidst busy lives. As we wrap up an incredible 7 months of training for our MTR trainees of the EmpowerZ Programme, we would like to take a moment to look back on the transformative experiences we have all shared. It is our pleasure to work together with MTR Corporation Limited to curate a series of training, team building and sharing sessions for trainees, staffs and supervisors at MTR. From day one, our focus has been on nurturing not just skills, but a strong sense of growth mindset, support network and collaboration. Pre-Onboarding Training : We kicked off our journey with a welcoming pre-onboarding session that prepares trainees with the right mindset for growth. Trainees were equipped with essential tools and knowledge, ensuring they felt confident as they stepped into their new roles. Team Building Workshop : Recognizing the importance of teamwork, we organized various team-building activities that fostered trust and mutual understanding between trainees, staff and supervisors of MTR. These experiences have not only strengthened bonds but also enhanced their collective problem-solving skills and communication skills, laying a strong foundation for future collaboration with the team. People Skills Training : Communication and interpersonal skills are vital in career growth. Our dedicated session on people skills empowered trainees to engage effectively with colleagues and clients through effective communications and with confidence. We also engaged trainees in self-reflection and practical strategies for fostering personal growth and reducing daily stress at work. Role Models Sharing : One of the highlights of our training was the opportunity for trainees to hear from inspiring role models. Professionals from diverse backgrounds shared their journeys, insights, and valuable lessons learned along the way. This exchange of experiences has not only motivated our trainees but also allowed them to ask questions about the challenges they face in the workplace, guiding our trainees as they envision their futures. As we celebrate the completion of the training sessions, we are excited to see how the trainees will continuously apply their skills. We are glad to be interviewed by Sing Tao Daily, where we shared our insights on fostering diversity and inclusion. Our Cultural Ambassadors emphasized the unique challenges faced by individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds in Hong Kong, particularly the barriers to community connection that can arise from language differences and cultural diversity. To support these communities, one of our initiatives "100 FUN Chinese Class" program, is specifically designed for primary school students from various ethnic backgrounds. Through collaborating with a diverse team of tutors, including both Chinese and non-Chinese educators, we co-create teaching materials that resonate with students' daily lives, enhancing their motivation to learn Chinese. Additionally, outdoor learning activities were organized to enrich students’ holistic experiences, helping them feel a deeper sense of belonging in their communities and encouraging active participation in various educational and social opportunities. Together with our community tours and multicultural workshops, we aim to foster mutual understanding among individuals from different backgrounds. To promote social inclusion in the long term and cultivate cultural awareness from a young age, WEDO GLOBAL also partnered with a local school to conduct a program on Multicultural and Global-minded education. This program aims to inspire students to learn how to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds, equip cross-cultural communication skills and enhance the cultural sensitivity of students to achieve inclusion in school. We were honored to co-create the housewarming celebration for HKBN's brand new office at the Quayside. As the emcee for this special occasion, we were delighted to commemorate this exciting milestone with over 500 enthusiastic staff. The new office provides a modern, collaborative and inclusive workspace that will undoubtedly fuel HKBN's continued growth and innovation. The workspace features wheelchair-friendly environments and female-friendly facilities such as the HER Lounge, HER Bath, HER Fridge and HER Locker. Additionally, the office has implemented measures to promote recycling and environmental sustainability. HKBN has been an early supporter of WEDO GLOBAL. We collaborated with the CSI Fund to provide cultural learning experiences for secondary school students from low-income families, helping them bridge the cultural gap and enhance their cultural sensitivity. - HSBC x WEDO GLOBAL: Celebrating Cultural Diversity - Arabic Cultural Experience and Community Exploration
We are excited to have organized an Arabic Calligraphy Art Workshop and Tsim Sha Tsui Community Tour for HSBC staff recently. Engaging in these multicultural activities helps bridge cultural gaps and enhance cultural awareness. During the Arabic Calligraphy Art Workshop, participants learned about this beautiful art form, including the Arabic language and culture. They expressed their creativity through creating a painting with Arabic vocabulary, and shared the inspirations behind their creations, revealing diverse perspectives on building a loving, peaceful, and inclusive society. Participants shared the inspiration behind their artwork: 'I used various architectural designs that represent Hong Kong, highlighting how people from diverse backgrounds can get along peacefully together.” Additionally, HSBC staff joined our Tsim Sha Tsui Community Tour, visiting the Kowloon Mosque and Chungking Mansions. Many participants were captivated by their first experience inside the Kowloon Mosque, particularly its interior design, which contrasted with their initial expectations. Participants also had the opportunity to explore Chungking Mansions. The guided tour of Chungking Mansions deeply fascinated them with its diverse traditions and cultures. Participants shared their impressions of local ethnically diverse background people before and after the tour, and expressed that the tour inspired them to meet and communicate with more people from different cultural backgrounds. By actively engaging with different cultures, we can take significant steps toward understanding multiculturalism and our ethnically diverse community.
